What is solar energy?

Solar PV energy, also known as photovoltaic energy, is the process of converting sunlight directly into electricity using solar panels. These panels are made up of semiconductor materials that generate an electric current when exposed to sunlight.

This clean, renewable energy source is becoming increasingly popular as a way to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower electricity bills. Learn more about harnessing the power of solar!

LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) work by passing electricity through a semiconductor, which causes electrons to release energy in the form of light. This process, called electroluminescence, is far more energy-efficient than traditional bulbs that burn a filament.

LED lights offer therefore significant energy savings and a much longer lifespan compared to traditional bulbs, reducing both electricity costs and replacement frequency. Their durability, versatility, and eco-friendly nature further enhance their appeal for a wide range of applications.

Both NSW and VIC participate in the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), offering upfront solar discounts via STCs for businesses. NSW focuses on the Energy Savings Scheme (ESS), providing incentives for various energy efficiency upgrades (like LED upgrades) through Accredited Certificate Providers. Victoria previously offered business solar rebates but now emphasizes energy efficiency rebates for equipment upgrades, along with resources via Business Victoria. Check official government websites in each state for the latest program details and eligibility requirements, as incentives can change. Always use accredited installers for your projects.

Solar energy is a reliable and growing energy source. Solar panels boast long lifespans (25+ years) and low failure rates. While sunlight availability fluctuates, it’s predictable, allowing for optimized system design. Technological advancements constantly improve efficiency. Intermittency (night, clouds) can be mitigated with battery storage or grid connection. Location impacts energy production, but many regions offer viable solar potential. Overall, solar is a dependable renewable energy solution, contributing to a cleaner energy future.
