The Hidden Dangers of LED Lights

Since becoming popular in around 2015, LED light bulbs remain on top of green lighting solutions. Hailed as a powerhouse in the global energy efficiency movement, LEDs have become the lighting of choice for many.

The ability to burn up a fraction of the energy that conventional lighting uses is impressive to begin with. Coupled with a much longer lifespan and offering bigger savings, what’s not to like?

Well, it turns out that the proliferation of LED lighting is one of the major contributing factors to light pollution. Given the notion of increased energy savings, people have become negligent in their light usage.

What Is Light Pollution?

The current state of worldwide light pollution is alarming. An article posted on news.com.au revealed that artificially lit outdoor areas increased at a pace of 2.2 per cent every year, starting from 2012. This data was obtained from a study published in the journal Science Advances. The study was supported by satellite images of the Earth’s surface growing brighter at night.

Also referred to as “photopollution”, light pollution is defined by the presence of artificial light in nighttime environments. Unfortunately, this is what happens as urbanisation spreads from one place to another. Offices now operate on graveyard shifts, while bars and restaurants stay open till the wee hours of the morning.

Affecting Everyone and Everything

The problem is, more people are now keeping their lights on for longer at night. This is especially true for those who have installed LED lights, as costs are no longer something to think about.

As light pollution increases, so too are the disturbances in ecosystems and imbalances in human health. As a way to counteract this, a greater sense of responsibility in light usage is crucial. Switch lights off when not in use and opt for bulbs with lower intensity.
